Nigerian-Americans have recorded notable victories in the November 3, 2026, United States midterm elections, securing elective positions across Maryland, Texas, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

The successful candidates include Will Jawando, Junior Ezeonu, Oye Owolewa, Carol Kazeem and Segun Adeyina, whose victory in Georgia was confirmed by later election tracking after initial reports described the race as undecided.

In Maryland, Democrat Will Jawando defeated Republican Esther Wells to become the next executive of Montgomery County. Official results published by Maryland election authorities showed Jawando receiving 242,676 votes, representing 77.91 per cent, against Wells’ 67,640 votes, or 21.71 per cent.

Jawando previously served on the Montgomery County Council. He is the son of a Nigerian father and an American mother.

In Texas, 27-year-old Junior Ezeonu secured the District 101 seat in the State House of Representatives. Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Ezeonu moved to the United States at the age of two.

He defeated incumbent Chris Turner in the Democratic primary and subsequently emerged as the only candidate in the November general election after no Republican opponent entered the race.

Ezeonu previously served on the Grand Prairie City Council, where he became the city’s youngest mayor pro tempore.

In Washington, DC, Democrat Oye Owolewa won an at-large seat on the District of Columbia Council. Reports by local publication The 51st indicated that he secured approximately 69 per cent of the vote, defeating independent candidate Elissa Silverman.

Owolewa is a pharmacist and the son of Nigerian immigrants from Kwara and Osun states. He previously served as the District’s elected shadow representative, a position through which he advocated for Washington, DC, statehood and congressional representation.

Meanwhile, Carol Kazeem retained her seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing District 159. The Democrat defeated Republican challenger Michael Bannon to secure another term in the state legislature.

Kazeem was among eight Nigerian-Americans who won legislative seats during the 2022 US midterm elections.

In Georgia, Nigerian-born Democratic incumbent Segun Adeyina was seeking re-election to the State House of Representatives for District 110 against Republican challenger Charles Lollar.

Although early reports showed the contest was still being counted, subsequent election tracking listed Adeyina as the winner, with 21,696 votes against Lollar’s 6,991.

Adeyina, first elected in 2022, represents parts of Gwinnett County. He is also the executive director of the Nigerian American Public Advisory Committee, an organisation involved in voter education and registration among immigrant communities.

The victories highlight the growing participation of Nigerians and people of Nigerian descent in American public life, with elected representatives serving at county, state and district levels.

The results also come after substantial participation in the 2026 midterm elections, with nearly 48 million Americans casting early ballots ahead of Election Day.

As the new officeholders prepare to assume their responsibilities, their victories are expected to attract attention among Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
