American voters have dealt President Donald Trump and the Republican Party a significant electoral setback after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.

The results represent a major shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with Democrats recording unexpected victories in traditionally Republican states and districts that had supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

According to projections by the Associated Press, Democrats captured the Senate and House of Representatives, ending Republican control of Congress and setting the stage for a more confrontational relationship between the White House and lawmakers.

The Republican losses were particularly significant in states such as Texas, Kansas, South Carolina and North Carolina, where Democratic candidates overturned long-standing Republican advantages.

In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race, while Gina Hinojosa won the governorship, marking a historic Democratic breakthrough in a state that had not elected a Democratic governor since 1990.

Democrats also recorded victories in Georgia, Ohio and other closely contested states, while several Republican candidates endorsed by Trump failed to secure election.

The election results reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of economic conditions, rising living costs and the war involving Iran.

Exit polls conducted by SSRS for a consortium of US media organisations indicated that approximately half of voters viewed the midterm elections as an opportunity to rebuke Trump. About 70 per cent also said they wanted Congress to provide stronger checks and balances on the president.

The Iran conflict emerged as a particularly important issue, with rising fuel prices adding to concerns about household expenses. Trump subsequently acknowledged that the war contributed to his party’s poor performance, while congratulating Democrats and saying they had “done a good job”.

However, the president rejected suggestions that the results represented a personal defeat, arguing that he was not on the ballot and claiming Republicans would have won by a landslide if he had contested the election.

The Democratic victory gives the party control of congressional committees, greater oversight powers and the ability to investigate the administration’s policies and decisions.

Democratic leaders have indicated that their priorities will include addressing the cost of living, reviewing healthcare policies, challenging aspects of Trump’s immigration agenda and increasing scrutiny of federal government activities.

The results follow an election cycle marked by significant voter participation. TheDailyNewsHub previously reported that nearly 48 million Americans cast early ballots ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, setting a new record for early voting in a midterm election.

Despite the Democratic gains, Trump remains in office and retains presidential powers, including the ability to veto legislation passed by Congress. However, the new congressional balance is expected to make the final two years of his presidency considerably more politically challenging.

The outcome has also triggered questions within the Republican Party about its campaign strategy, leadership and future direction ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
