First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to voters in the South-East to support the re-election of her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the 2027 presidential election.
Mrs Tinubu made the appeal on Wednesday, September 9, in Owerri, Imo State, during her visit to the region as part of a women’s empowerment programme.
Speaking to women at the event, the First Lady urged them to vote for President Tinubu, saying the administration would continue working to improve the country.
“Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better,” she said.
She added: “I want to enjoy Nigeria at old age, so I will work for Nigeria, for my old age.”
18,500 women to benefit nationwide
The First Lady also highlighted the federal government’s women’s empowerment programme, which is being implemented through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to reports from the event, the programme is expected to benefit 18,500 women across Nigeria when the nationwide rollout is completed.
For the South-East, 500 women from each of the five states — Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo — were selected to receive items designed to support new and existing businesses.
The equipment includes generators, industrial grinding machines, gas cylinders, gas cookers and ovens, among other items.
Imo beneficiaries increase to 2,500
In Imo State, the number of beneficiaries was increased after Governor Hope Uzodimma provided additional empowerment items for another 2,000 women.
This brought the total number of beneficiaries in the state to 2,500.
Following the governor’s intervention, Mrs Tinubu announced an additional ₦100,000 cash support for each beneficiary in Imo.
The First Lady said the initiative was intended to strengthen women’s participation in economic activities and help beneficiaries improve their livelihoods and support their families.
She described women’s contribution as important to nation-building and said the programme was aligned with the administration’s economic growth and sustainable development agenda.
Political appeal comes ahead of 2027
Mrs Tinubu’s appeal comes as political activities and early positioning for the 2027 presidential election continue across Nigeria.
Her message in Owerri was particularly directed at voters in the South-East, where President Tinubu will be seeking support for another term.
The First Lady linked the call for re-election to the administration’s efforts to improve the country, telling residents that she also wanted to see a better Nigeria in her later years.
The appeal was made during an event officially focused on women’s economic empowerment rather than a formal campaign rally.
Uzodimma backs Tinubu’s re-election
Governor Hope Uzodimma also expressed support for President Tinubu’s re-election during the First Lady’s visit.
Reports from the event said the governor commended the empowerment initiative and pledged the support of Imo residents for President Tinubu’s 2027 bid.
Mrs Tinubu was also honoured with the traditional title “Osodieme” in Imo during the visit.
With the 2027 election approaching, the First Lady’s comments add to the growing political conversation around President Tinubu’s bid for a second term, while the women’s empowerment programme provides the administration with an opportunity to showcase its economic support initiatives.
