The Edo Specialist Hospital (ESH), Benin City, has applauded Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for equipping the hospital with in vitro fertilisation (IVF) facilities, describing the intervention as a major boost to reproductive healthcare and a source of hope for couples battling infertility.
The commendation was made yesterday during a press conference and facility tour held to commemorate the hospital’s seventh anniversary.
Addressing journalists, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Anthonia Inibokun Njoku, said the governor’s investment in the health sector has continued to strengthen healthcare delivery across Edo State.
She noted that the newly installed IVF equipment would enable the hospital to assist couples facing challenges with conception.

The commendation was made on Monday during a press conference and facility tour held to commemorate the hospital’s seventh anniversary.
Addressing journalists, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Anthonia Inibokun Njoku, said the governor’s investment in the health sector has continued to strengthen healthcare delivery across Edo State.
She noted that the newly installed IVF equipment would enable the hospital to assist couples facing challenges with conception.
“In reproductive healthcare, many couples who find it difficult to have their babies will now receive assistance through the IVF programme,” Njoku said.
Dr. Njoku also disclosed that the hospital’s residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology has secured full accreditation from both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
She added that the institution recently obtained accreditation for its Family Medicine and Dentistry residency programmes, further expanding its capacity to train medical professionals.
According to her, the achievements recorded by the hospital have been made possible through sustained support from the Edo State Government, which has continued to improve healthcare services at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
She revealed that Governor Okpebholo approved the absorption of 126 contract staff into the Edo State civil service and also granted approval for the recruitment of additional healthcare workers, resulting in more than 290 direct employments.
The CMD further announced that the hospital had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mudiame University, Irrua, under which Edo Specialist Hospital will serve as a teaching hospital for the institution’s medical students.
“The partnership strengthens our role as both a healthcare provider and a training institution,” she said. Njoku stated that the hospital now provides Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) services as part of efforts to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare.
She also said the facility is accredited on both the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EDOHIS) platform and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) platform, enabling beneficiaries of the state and federal health insurance programmes to access medical services at the hospital.
The anniversary activities ended with a guided inspection of the hospital’s facilities led by Dr. Suleman Ozemoka and other management staff, during which journalists were taken round key departments to assess the equipment and services available at the institution., many couples who find it difficult to have their babies will now receive assistance through the IVF programme,” Njoku said.
