President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene in the deteriorating conditions of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti road, following reports of severe hardship faced by motorists and commuters.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed the directive in a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Francis Nwaze, saying the President had ordered immediate action to restore movement along the affected routes.
“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi was quoted as saying.
Following the directive, Umahi ordered the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the situation and commence emergency remedial works.
The intervention was already underway by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with ministry officials deployed to the affected areas.
While the team headed to Ekiti and Kogi states, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate a similar intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor.
The meeting in Benin is expected to bring together representatives of the Edo and Delta State governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to identify immediate solutions to the challenges confronting motorists along the major route.
Umahi also accepted responsibility for the difficulties experienced by road users and apologised to commuters who have been stranded or subjected to lengthy delays.
He assured motorists that the government’s intervention would not be limited to temporary measures, with emergency relief efforts being pursued alongside permanent solutions aimed at restoring the roads and improving their long-term reliability.
The Federal Government said it remained committed to taking immediate corrective action while pursuing lasting solutions to the deteriorating condition of the affected roads.
