The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on Independence Bridge, Lagos Island, ahead of urgent asphalt repairs scheduled to begin on Friday night, October 16, and continue through Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The repair works are being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works, according to a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Works and reported on Thursday, October 15.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the intervention would affect both the inbound and outbound sections of the bridge, with traffic management measures introduced to maintain access for motorists while the work is underway.
Under the arrangement, sections of the bridge will be partially closed in phases rather than shutting down the entire crossing at once. At least one lane will remain available for vehicles to access their destinations as work progresses.
The asphalt repairs are scheduled to begin at night on Friday, October 16, and continue during the day and night on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. The government expects the work to be completed by the end of Sunday, although motorists should follow official updates in case the schedule changes.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy officers to manage vehicle movement around the affected sections and help minimise disruption.
Osiyemi urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time, consider alternative routes where necessary, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officials throughout the repair period.
The temporary restrictions are likely to affect commuters travelling between Lagos Island and adjoining areas, particularly during busy periods. Motorists who regularly use the bridge are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and pay attention to traffic signs and instructions from officials.
The planned repairs come amid continuing efforts to maintain critical road infrastructure in Lagos, where heavy traffic volumes make bridge maintenance particularly disruptive for commuters and businesses.
Independence Bridge serves as an important connection within the Lagos Island and Victoria Island transport network. Maintaining access during the repairs is therefore a key part of the traffic management plan announced by the state government.
Motorists are advised to monitor announcements from the Lagos State Government, the Ministry of Works and LASTMA for further guidance during the repair period.
