Nine people have been killed after a private Learjet 60 crashed into a residential neighbourhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, on Sunday, November 1, 2026, triggering a massive fire and an emergency response.
The aircraft crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time near Cresthaven, close to Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, according to information released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy subsequently confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft died in the incident.
The Learjet, a 22-year-old twin-engine business aircraft, had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was travelling to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it went down.
According to the FAA, the aircraft experienced an extremely rapid descent of approximately 350 feet per second shortly before the crash. The circumstances surrounding the sudden loss of altitude remain under investigation.
The aircraft plunged into a residential area, erupting into a massive fireball upon impact. Videos circulating after the incident showed the jet descending steeply before striking the ground near a busy roadway.
The impact created a large crater in the pavement, with flames and thick smoke rising from the crash site. The aircraft reportedly came down close to residential properties and passing vehicles, raising concerns about the potential for additional casualties.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident occurred in the vicinity of Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Authorities subsequently closed both northbound and southbound lanes of the road and urged motorists to avoid the area.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and law enforcement officers, were deployed to secure the location and manage the aftermath of the crash.
Initial reports indicated that authorities had yet to establish whether anyone on the ground was injured. The identities of the nine people aboard the aircraft had also not been publicly released at the time of reporting.
Further information emerging from air traffic control recordings and flight-tracking data indicated that the aircraft encountered challenging weather conditions before the crash.
Reports said the pilot had communicated concerns about ice accumulation and turbulence while flying at approximately 35,000 feet. The aircraft subsequently experienced a rapid descent, with the pilot reportedly declaring an emergency and reporting an overspeed condition.
However, investigators have not established whether the reported weather conditions or any other technical or operational factors caused the crash.
The FAA confirmed that it would work alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The NTSB is expected to lead the investigation and provide further updates.
Investigators will examine the aircraft, flight data, weather conditions and available communications to determine what happened during the final moments of the flight.
The crash adds to a series of fatal aviation incidents that have drawn attention to aircraft safety and the importance of thorough accident investigations. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or determined the cause of the Palm Beach County crash. Further details are expected as the federal investigation progresses.
