The Nigerian Army is deepening partnership with World Archery Africa and the Nigeria Archery Federation (NAFED) to advance sports development, strengthen civil-military relations and support national prestige through high-level sporting excellence.

The collaboration also seeks to enhance physical readiness, technical capacity and Nigeria’s hosting capability for major continental competitions.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director Army Public Relations.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, stated this on Thursday, 8 October 2026, while receiving a joint delegation from World Archery Africa and NAFED, led by NAFED President Mr. Mohammed Baba Abdullahi, at Army Headquarters, Abuja.

Shaibu noted that archery aligns with core military principles of focus, marksmanship and discipline, while directing the Chief of Training to commence planning for the proposed African Indoor Archery Championship at the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery facility.

In his remarks, Mr. Mohammed Baba Abdullahi commended the Nigerian Army for constructing Africa’s first dedicated standard archery pitch within a military formation and noted that military archers recently secured all of Nigeria’s medals at the African Championship.

World Archery Africa President Mr. Amine similarly praised the Army’s sponsorship, facilities and hospitality, while requesting support to host Africa’s inaugural Indoor Archery Championship, describing the institutional partnership as a model for sports development across the continent.
