American singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after a London court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a nightclub in 2023.

The 37-year-old was sentenced on Monday, October 26, at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to affray over the incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London, on February 19, 2023.

Prosecutors told the court that Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a glass tequila bottle during the confrontation. CCTV footage shown during the proceedings captured the singer hitting the producer before the violence continued.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as dangerous, warning that repeatedly striking someone on the head with a glass bottle could have caused more serious injuries. He stressed that Brown’s fame and commercial success did not entitle him to preferential treatment.

Brown’s vocal coach and friend, Omololu Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

The court heard that Brown’s guilty plea, stable employment and charitable contributions were among the factors considered during sentencing. His lawyer said he regretted the incident and offered an apology.

Brown had initially denied more serious charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. Those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to affray.

The singer was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 after returning to the United Kingdom for a concert. He was subsequently released on bail secured by a £5 million guarantee while the case proceeded.

The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve the prison term immediately, provided he complies with the sentence’s conditions. A breach or further offence could have consequences under the court’s order.

The case has drawn renewed attention to Brown’s history of legal troubles and the treatment of high-profile figures in the criminal justice system.
