Nigeria’s Flamingos have been crowned champions of the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup after producing a commanding 4-0 victory over Togo in the final in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday, September 27.
The victory completed a perfect campaign for the Nigerian side, who won all five of their matches to finish the competition with a maximum 15 points. The Flamingos scored 17 goals and conceded only two throughout the tournament.
Captain Harmony Chidi played a central role in Nigeria’s victory, scoring twice from the penalty spot in the first half. She opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Nigeria were awarded a penalty before converting another spot-kick in the 35th minute to give the Flamingos a 2-0 advantage at half-time.
Nigeria continued to control the match after the break, with Oluebube Umejiaku extending the lead in the 67th minute. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi then completed the scoring in the 90th minute as the Flamingos sealed a 4-0 victory.
The triumph capped an impressive run for Nigeria, who began the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Niger Republic before defeating Ghana 4-2. The Flamingos subsequently recorded 2-0 wins over Burkina Faso and hosts Côte d’Ivoire before overcoming Togo in the final.
The regional title is Nigeria’s first WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup triumph. Ghana won the inaugural edition in 2024, while Nigeria finished as runners-up after losing the final on penalties.
The title also provides a boost for the Flamingos ahead of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Nigeria Football Federation Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the team following their regional success and said the squad was in good form ahead of the global tournament.
The Flamingos, who won bronze at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, will now turn their attention to the global competition, carrying the confidence of an unbeaten regional campaign into their preparations.
