The Federal Government has launched a nationwide digital addressing system that assigns unique postcodes to buildings across Nigeria, in a move aimed at reducing failed deliveries, improving emergency response and strengthening the country’s logistics and public service infrastructure.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, introduced through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), was officially launched on Thursday, October 1, 2026, by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

The system is designed to address a longstanding problem in Nigeria: the difficulty of accurately identifying homes, businesses and other locations, particularly in areas where street names, house numbers and conventional addresses are incomplete or inconsistent.

Announcing the launch, Communications Minister Bosun Tijani said poor addressing contributes to estimated annual losses of between ₦50 billion and ₦80 billion through missed and failed deliveries.

The minister said the challenge extends beyond postal services, affecting businesses, financial services, security operations, emergency response and government planning.

He explained that reliable location information is essential for services such as ambulance dispatch, business deliveries and the deployment of public infrastructure.

Under the new arrangement, every addressable building is assigned a unique 11-character alphanumeric postcode connected to its geographical location through a Geographic Information System (GIS).

The code is structured around five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building. This allows a specific building to be identified through a standard digital reference rather than relying exclusively on descriptions that may be difficult for delivery personnel or emergency responders to interpret.

Unlike an address that identifies an individual occupant, the digital postcode belongs to the building itself. It therefore remains associated with the property even when residents, tenants or businesses occupying it change.

The new system is intended to complement existing street addresses and conventional postal information, not simply replace them. Users can share the code alongside their regular address to make it easier for delivery companies, visitors and service providers to locate the correct destination.

NIPOST’s official postcode platform allows individuals to search for, save and share building postcodes. People whose buildings have not yet been captured can also submit a request for a postcode through the website or mobile application.

The service’s frequently asked questions page states that individuals can find and use their digital postcodes free of charge. Users can also share the codes with family members, businesses and delivery services or use them to obtain directions to the identified building.

For businesses and organisations, the system provides options for integrating the postcode database into their digital platforms and operational processes through application programming interfaces (APIs), software development kits and other access arrangements.

This could help online retailers, logistics companies and financial institutions improve the accuracy of customer addresses and reduce difficulties associated with verifying delivery locations.

The Federal Government is also positioning the initiative as part of Nigeria’s wider Digital Public Infrastructure, with potential applications in national security, emergency management, public administration and economic planning.

The project had been under development before Thursday’s nationwide launch. In June 2026, the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and NIPOST convened a national workshop to discuss how the digital postcode system could be integrated into security operations, emergency response and public service delivery.

At the workshop, Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, described the system as a common framework for identifying locations across different institutions and services.

She said its success would depend not only on the technology but also on adoption and integration by government agencies, businesses and members of the public.

The launch therefore marks a move from the development and validation stages towards public use of the addressing framework.

However, the extent to which the system reduces failed deliveries and the estimated financial losses will depend on how widely it is adopted by delivery companies, businesses, government agencies and individuals.

Its effectiveness will also require accurate building records, regular updates, reliable digital access and cooperation among institutions that need to use the location data.

For a country with a large population and a rapidly expanding e-commerce and logistics market, a consistent way to identify buildings could help address a practical obstacle to trade and service delivery.

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to visit the official portal at https://postcode.gov.ng, search for their building’s digital postcode and begin sharing it when providing location details to businesses, service providers and other people who need to find them.
