The Nigeria Police Force has heightened security across the country following intelligence indicating possible coordinated attacks by terrorist elements on schools, places of worship, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps and other vulnerable locations.
The alert was contained in a wireless communication dated September 13, 2026, issued by the Force Department of Operations in Abuja and circulated to police formations across the country. The communication was referenced as CB: 0900/FDPS/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL38/68 and marked “Security General” with instructions that it be treated as very important.
According to the reported police directive, intelligence available to the Department of Operations indicated an increased mobilisation of terrorist elements for possible coordinated attacks on places of worship, educational institutions, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations.
The North-East, North-West and North-Central regions, as well as parts of the South-West, were identified as areas requiring particular attention. The alert also reportedly cited intelligence concerning the movement of armed elements from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State.
Reports on the security communication further said suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) operatives and local collaborators were conducting surveillance and reconnaissance of potential targets. However, these details are contained in the reported intelligence assessment and have not been independently verified as evidence that a specific attack is imminent.
Police commanders were directed to intensify surveillance, patrols, stop-and-search operations, access control and rapid-response arrangements around locations considered vulnerable.
The directive also called for stronger security along state borders and major entry and exit routes, while urging police formations to work closely with other security agencies and relevant institutions.
Schools, religious institutions and NYSC facilities have been given particular attention because of the large numbers of people expected to gather at such locations, especially as the 2026/2027 academic session gets underway. Reports said the police assessment raised concerns that terrorists could attempt to exploit the resumption period.
Religious leaders, school authorities and NYSC officials have also been urged to strengthen vigilance, improve information sharing and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or movements to security agencies.
The latest alert comes amid continuing security challenges involving terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in different parts of Nigeria. Security agencies have previously warned that schools and other places where large numbers of civilians gather can be vulnerable to attacks.
Importantly, the alert does not establish that attacks are certain or imminent. It indicates that security authorities have received intelligence they consider serious enough to warrant increased preventive measures.
As of publication, reports on the alert had not been accompanied by a detailed public statement from the Nigeria Police Force explaining the intelligence assessment. Premium Times and other Nigerian outlets have reported the contents of the September 13 police communication, while The Nigeria Lawyer said police spokesperson CSP Ani Iniedu had been contacted for clarification.
