US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the war involving Iran contributed to his Republican Party’s losses in the November 3 midterm elections, as Democrats prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress.

Speaking in separate telephone interviews with Fox News and The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday night, Trump congratulated the Democrats on their performance, saying: “They did a good job.”

“I think a part of it was Iran,” he told Fox News, while maintaining that voters understood the importance of his administration’s actions against Tehran.

The president also suggested that rising petrol prices associated with the conflict had influenced voters, who were unwilling to bear the immediate financial consequences of the war.

Trump, however, defended his decision to launch the military campaign, insisting he had acted correctly and would make the same decision again.

The remarks followed a major electoral setback for Republicans, with Democrats securing victories that are expected to give them control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The outcome will significantly affect the final two years of Trump’s presidency, as Democrats gain greater influence over legislation, congressional investigations and oversight of the administration.

Despite acknowledging the impact of the Iran conflict, Trump rejected the suggestion that the results represented a personal defeat. He argued that he was not on the ballot and claimed Republicans would have performed better if he had contested the election himself.

The president also indicated that he was prepared to work with Democratic lawmakers on legislation, although he warned that he would veto proposals he considered unacceptable.

The Iran conflict had become a major issue during the election campaign, particularly as rising energy costs increased pressure on American households. Republicans faced criticism over the economic consequences of the military operation, while Democratic candidates highlighted the impact of higher fuel prices on the cost of living.

TheDailyNewsHub previously reported on US military strikes against an Iranian missile launcher on Qeshm Island, an escalation that brought the conflict into sharper focus ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump’s acknowledgement provides an indication of the political difficulties the conflict created for his party, although he has continued to defend the military campaign and its objectives.
