American filmmaker, actor and producer Tyler Perry has said he has no plans to get married, explaining that his concern is not marriage itself but the financial consequences he associates with divorce.
Perry made the remarks during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he was asked whether he would ever get married.
His response was direct: “Nope.”
Explaining his position, Perry said, “It’s not the marriage that bothers me. It’s the divorce. Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce, so I’m good just being free.”
The comments have attracted attention because Perry has built much of his entertainment career around stories examining marriage, relationships and divorce. His 2007 film Why Did I Get Married? explored the challenges faced by married couples, while his 2026 Netflix film Why Did I Get Married Again? revisits the franchise nearly two decades after the original.
Perry, 57, has never been married. He was previously in a long-term relationship with Ethiopian model and filmmaker Gelila Bekele, with whom he shares a son, Aman. The couple separated in 2020.
His latest comments suggest that he has chosen to remain unmarried despite his extensive exploration of relationships in his films and television productions.
Perry’s concerns also appear to be rooted in his observations of the financial consequences that can accompany divorce. However, his statement that everyone he knows who became successful and subsequently went broke did so because of divorce is a personal observation, rather than a factual claim that can be applied generally.
The filmmaker’s remarks come at a time when his latest Why Did I Get Married? instalment is receiving renewed attention. Why Did I Get Married Again? was released on Netflix in September 2026 and brings back several characters from the original films while introducing a new generation of characters.
For Perry, however, his own answer appears settled: despite spending much of his career telling stories about marriage, he says he is comfortable remaining single because, in his view, the potential risks associated with divorce outweigh the attraction of marriage.
