Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang is expected to attend a state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump for Chinese President Xi Jinping during Xi’s planned visit to Washington later this month, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Report on September 15 said that Huang is set to attend the dinner, which is scheduled for September 24, 2026, when Trump is expected to meet Xi in Washington. The White House has not publicly released the full guest list.
Huang’s expected presence is notable because Nvidia is one of the world’s most important suppliers of advanced semiconductor chips used to develop and operate artificial intelligence systems. The company has consequently become an important player in the increasingly strategic US-China competition over AI and advanced computing.
The dinner also comes at a time when Washington and Beijing are attempting to manage a range of disagreements involving trade, technology and access to advanced semiconductors.
Huang has maintained relationships with leaders on both sides of the US-China technology divide. He attended a state dinner hosted by Xi for Trump during the US president’s visit to China in May, alongside other prominent American technology executives, including Elon Musk and former Apple CEO Tim Cook.
The upcoming White House dinner would be only the second state dinner of Trump’s second term, following the dinner held for Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
State dinners are among the highest ceremonial honours extended by a US president to visiting foreign leaders, making the planned event particularly significant given Washington and Beijing’s continuing strategic rivalry.
Huang’s expected attendance also comes amid an increasingly prominent debate over the pace and risks of artificial intelligence development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has recently called for greater caution in the development of frontier AI systems, warning about potential safety and geopolitical risks. Huang, meanwhile, has argued that the United States should continue leading AI development while addressing safety concerns. At the All-In Summit in Los Angeles this week, Huang discussed AI risks during a conversation that was interrupted by a phone call from Trump.
Nvidia’s role in the AI industry has also placed Huang at the centre of discussions over US restrictions on the export of advanced AI chips to China and the extent to which American technology companies should be allowed to sell sophisticated processors to the Chinese market.
The Trump-Xi meeting is expected to address broader US-China economic and strategic issues. Reuters reported that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also due to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of the summit, as Washington and Beijing continue negotiations on trade and other matters.
China and the United States have also been discussing possible tariff reductions on selected goods, while disagreements over artificial intelligence, advanced chips and rare-earth exports remain important elements of the relationship.
For Huang, appearing at the dinner would place one of the world’s most influential AI executives alongside the leaders of the two countries at the centre of the global AI race.
