The United States has carried out limited military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, targeting an Iranian missile launcher after Iranian forces reportedly fired at an American aircraft, according to US officials.

The operation took place on Monday, November 2, just hours before Americans headed to the polls for the November 3 midterm elections.

US officials described the strikes as defensive, saying they were intended to protect American military assets from Iranian surface-to-air missile threats. One official said the operation destroyed a missile launcher used in the attempted attack on a US aircraft.

Iranian state media reported several explosions on Qeshm Island following the strikes. However, details of the damage and any possible casualties had not been independently established.

According to reports by Reuters, the operation was limited in scope and did not represent a return to major US combat operations against Iran. The Pentagon referred inquiries to US Central Command, which had not publicly provided further details at the time of reporting.

The development comes amid heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important international shipping route through which a significant proportion of global oil supplies passes.

Could the strikes influence US midterm voters?

The timing of the military operation has raised questions about its possible political implications for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Foreign policy and national security could influence voter perceptions, but the economic consequences of the conflict may prove more significant.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll published in October found that 78 per cent of Americans blamed Trump’s policies for price increases outpacing their earnings. Separately, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs reported that 68 per cent of Americans believed the war with Iran was not worth fighting.

Higher fuel prices, inflation and concerns about the cost of living have become major issues in the election campaign, creating potential difficulties for Republican candidates seeking to retain control of Congress.

The latest strikes could therefore have competing political effects. Supporters of Trump may interpret the operation as evidence of strong leadership and a willingness to protect American military personnel. However, voters opposed to the conflict could view the attack as another indication that the administration is prolonging an expensive and potentially dangerous confrontation.

There is also the possibility of a rally-around-the-flag effect if voters perceive American forces to be under attack. Whether that translates into electoral support, however, remains uncertain.

With control of Congress at stake, Tuesday’s election will provide an important indication of how Americans assess Trump’s leadership, including his handling of the conflict with Iran.

Ultimately, the impact of the Qeshm Island strikes may depend less on the military operation itself than on whether voters see it as necessary self-defence or another escalation in a conflict that has already affected their finances.
