Nigerian software programmer Olaniran Taiwo Sikiru has won a silver medal at the 2026 High-Tech Championship Final in Veliky Novgorod, Russia, marking Nigeria’s first participation in the international professional skills competition.

Taiwo finished second in the Quality Control Specialist for Transport Logistics Processes category at the championship, which was held from September 14 to 18, 2026.

He competed with the support of Ojetimi Abdulfatai, another Nigerian who served as his expert and technical mentor during the competition.

The championship brought together more than 15,000 participants from Russia and 30 foreign countries, with competitions organised across 20 high-tech competencies. The official organisers said the event included about 300 contestants and experts, alongside a wider business and exhibition programme.

Taiwo’s second-place finish came in a specialised discipline combining technology, quality control and transport logistics. Although he is a software programmer, his participation placed his technical background within a competition focused on modern transport and logistics processes.

The 2026 championship was particularly focused on the transport sector, with the competencies developed in cooperation with Russia’s Ministry of Transport. The organisers said the areas covered reflected the growing use of digital technologies and advanced production systems in transportation.

The event was the fourth final of Russia’s High-Tech Championship and featured participants from all 89 regions of the Russian Federation as well as international delegations. The official programme listed competencies ranging from transport data analysis and artificial-intelligence applications to railway, aviation and logistics technologies.

According to reports on Nigeria’s participation, Taiwo’s appearance represented the country’s debut at the championship, with his silver-medal finish providing Nigeria with a second-place result in one of the event’s specialised international categories.

The organisers said 20 competitors won in the main category, while another 40 were named prize winners, with 125 medals awarded across the main, individual and international standings. Second-place finishers were listed for a prize of 200,000 Russian roubles.

Taiwo’s result adds to the growing participation of Nigerian professionals in international technology and skills competitions and highlights the country’s representation in a championship focused on emerging technical and transport-related competencies.
