One person has died and three others have been rescued after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
The incident occurred on Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road, with construction workers believed to have been trapped beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the casualties, saying it received a distress call at 12:10 a.m. and immediately deployed its Cobra Response Team from its Onipanu base. The team arrived at the scene at about 12:12 a.m. and began search-and-rescue operations.
According to LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, three adult men had been rescued alive by 3:33 a.m., while the body of another adult male was recovered from the debris.
The rescued victims received immediate medical attention from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transported to a hospital for further treatment. Their specific medical conditions were not disclosed in the available reports.
The rescue operation involved several emergency and security agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, LASEMA response personnel and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Alagbon Division. An excavator was also deployed to help remove debris and reach victims who might have been trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
The emergency agency said the cause of the collapse had not been determined and would be investigated by the relevant regulatory authorities.
The incident has renewed attention on building safety and construction oversight in Lagos, where authorities have repeatedly emphasised the need to enforce building regulations and address substandard construction. However, no official finding has yet established the specific circumstances that led to Friday’s collapse.
LASEMA expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the rescued victims a speedy recovery. At the time of the agency’s reported update, the search was continuing to establish whether anyone else remained trapped beneath the rubble.
