Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to tackle insecurity in Nigeria if elected president in 2027, declaring that no attempt to frustrate the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would stop the party from pursuing its political campaign.
Atiku made the commitment on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during the flag-off of the ADC presidential campaign in Sokoto State, where he called on Nigerians to support the party in the forthcoming general election.
He said Sokoto was deliberately selected for the campaign launch because of its historical significance and reputation for peace. The former vice-president also recalled promises made during his previous presidential campaign, saying he had returned to reaffirm his commitment to addressing insecurity.
The rally took place against the backdrop of a dispute between the ADC and the Sokoto State Government over preparations for the event, including allegations of restrictions on the party’s campaign activities.
On Tuesday, Atiku accused the state government of denying the opposition access to public facilities and logistical support. He also alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) was recruiting protesters to cause disturbances that could provide grounds for imposing a curfew and disrupting the rally.
The DSS subsequently ordered an investigation into the allegations. The Service described the claims as inconsistent with its operations and maintained that its personnel provide security protection to political actors across party lines.
The agency also cited an incident involving the ADC governorship candidate in Sokoto, Mannir Daniya, who it said was evacuated to safety by security personnel after an attack on October 31.
Despite the controversy, the ADC proceeded with the campaign flag-off. Atiku maintained that the party would not be intimidated or prevented from reaching voters as it prepares for the 2027 election.
He urged Nigerians to turn out and vote for the ADC, expressing confidence in the party’s political mission.
The Sokoto event marks the commencement of the ADC’s presidential campaign activities in the state as political parties intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
