The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is finalising arrangements to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general election, with presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, authorised to nominate key officials of the campaign structure.
The party disclosed the development on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, as it moved to resolve differences surrounding the composition of its presidential campaign machinery.
According to the NDC, Obi and Kwankwaso have been given the authority to nominate the Director-General, Deputy Director-General for the North, campaign spokesman, deputy spokesman, Head of New Media, Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and other principal officers, subject to consultation with the party leadership.
The decision followed meetings involving Obi, Kwankwaso, NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson and other members of the party leadership.
NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the party had already developed an organogram for the campaign structure in August and forwarded it to the presidential candidate and his running mate for their input. The party also received nominations from stakeholders across the country.
Campaign council to be inaugurated
The NDC said the official Presidential Campaign Council would be announced and inaugurated after the outstanding inputs from Obi and Kwankwaso had been received and incorporated.
The inauguration had initially been planned for the first week of September but was postponed because of Obi’s travel schedule, according to the party.
The latest arrangement comes after a disagreement between the party and the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement (OK Movement) over the creation of a separate campaign structure.
The support group had announced a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council on September 17. The NDC subsequently distanced itself from the structure, saying it had not been constituted by the party. The OK Movement maintained that it was an independent support organisation and did not require the party’s approval for its activities.
NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson subsequently said support groups should mobilise for candidates without creating structures that compete with the official machinery of the political party.
Campaign funding arrangements
The party also outlined arrangements for managing funds raised for the presidential campaign.
It said the Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director would work with the NDC National Treasurer to oversee campaign finances, while funds raised would be paid into a dedicated presidential campaign account.
The party said the arrangement was intended to promote transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with electoral reporting requirements.
NDC begins preparations for polling agents
Beyond the presidential campaign council, the NDC said it had begun preparations for the deployment of party agents ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party has directed its state and local government chairmen to meet with candidates and other stakeholders to compile lists of agents for the National Assembly elections and separate lists for governorship and State Assembly elections.
The lists will subsequently be reviewed and ratified by the party leadership, including Obi and Kwankwaso, before training begins.
The party said it is also working on a campaign timetable, with funding and fundraising arrangements to be led by the presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
The NDC urged its candidates, supporters and support groups to avoid internal disputes and concentrate on preparations for the 2027 elections.
The party’s official Presidential Campaign Council is expected to be announced and inaugurated after the remaining consultations with Obi and Kwankwaso are completed.
