The mother of three-year-old Nevada Pierre has spoken out after police responded to a dispute at his youth soccer game in Winter Park, Florida, amid claims that her son was sidelined because of his exceptional performance.

In an interview with ABC News, Nevada’s mother said her son had scored more than 40 goals in five games this season while playing against children about two years older than him. She believes his talent contributed to the decision to bench him and remove him from the youth sports programme.

The incident gained widespread attention after videos circulated online showing Nevada scoring goals before footage shifted to his parents speaking with police officers at the field.

However, the league’s account differs from the family’s. A league official told officers that Nevada had been pushing other players and alleged that disagreements with his parents over playing-time decisions and refereeing contributed to the confrontation.

The Winter Park Police Department said officers responded after a league official requested assistance with a dispute. Police classified the incident as civil, reporting that no one was arrested and nobody was formally forced to leave the park.

The youth sports organisation, i9 Sports, said it was aware of the concerns and was reviewing the circumstances. The family has received a refund, according to reports.

The incident has sparked debate online about how youth sports programmes should accommodate exceptionally talented young players while ensuring fair participation and appropriate behaviour among children and adults.

Nevada’s mother maintains that her son should not be discouraged from playing because of his ability. The competing accounts, however, mean the claim that he was removed solely for being too good has not been established as the definitive reason for the incident.
