Three people have been killed after two helicopters collided in mid-air near McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon, United States, triggering an emergency response and an investigation by federal aviation authorities.
The collision occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 29, in a field near the airport, about 40 miles southwest of Portland. Both helicopters crashed after the collision, and authorities confirmed that nobody aboard survived.
Yamhill County Sheriff Sam Elliott identified two of the victims as 22-year-old Maddie Aasbo, a flight instructor from Texas, and a student pilot from the United Kingdom. The third victim was identified as 38-year-old Tyler Delane Sturdevant, from Newberg, Oregon. Authorities have withheld the British student’s name while efforts to notify the family continue.
According to information released by investigators, the aircraft involved were a Robinson R22 and an Airbus AS350B2 helicopter. The Robinson was being used for an instructional flight, while the Airbus was reportedly on a maintenance flight. Aasbo and the British student were aboard one helicopter, while Sturdevant was the sole occupant of the other.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. The NTSB confirmed that it would lead the investigation, with federal investigators examining the wreckage and other available evidence to establish what happened before the aircraft collided.
One of the helicopters was associated with Jerry Trimble Helicopters, a flight training school and helicopter rental operator based at McMinnville Municipal Airport. The company expressed sadness over the incident and confirmed that it was cooperating with the authorities.
The crash also disrupted road traffic in the surrounding area, with a section of Oregon Route 233 and nearby local roads closed as emergency responders worked at the scene. Authorities asked members of the public to avoid the area to allow rescue and investigative operations to continue.
A witness told local media that he saw the two helicopters collide before falling to the ground. Emergency crews subsequently arrived at the scene, where they confirmed the fatalities.
The cause of the collision has not been established. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight operations, available communications and other evidence as part of efforts to determine the sequence of events leading to the crash.
The NTSB’s investigation will seek to establish the factors that contributed to the fatal collision. Until investigators release further findings, no cause or responsibility should be assumed.
