One person has died and four others have been rescued after a four-storey building under construction collapsed in Independence Layout, Enugu State, on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred on Ogbalu Street at about 6:00 a.m., according to a report by Channels Television. Workers were reportedly sleeping at the construction site when the structure suddenly collapsed.
Four workers were pulled from the rubble and taken to the Enugu State Teaching Hospital for medical treatment. One person was recovered dead from the debris.
Authorities said six people were believed to have been sleeping at the site when the building collapsed, although one of them had reportedly left the premises shortly before the incident.
Emergency response agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Red Cross, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the Nigeria Police Force, were involved in the rescue operation.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been established. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the construction and determine whether structural, construction or regulatory issues contributed to the incident.
The latest incident has again raised concerns about building safety and enforcement of construction standards in Enugu and other parts of Nigeria, where building collapses have repeatedly resulted in deaths and injuries.
