Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
Olusoji announced the passing on behalf of the family, describing Jacobs as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.”
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before beginning his professional career in British television and appearing in international productions.
He later established himself as a major figure in Nigeria’s film industry, featuring in numerous Nollywood productions and earning widespread recognition for his commanding performances and distinctive acting style.
Beyond acting, Jacobs was also involved in the development of Nigeria’s performing arts industry. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was associated with the Lufodo Group.
Over the course of his career, Jacobs received several major industry honours, including recognition for his lifetime contribution to African cinema and the Nigerian entertainment industry.
His death comes after years of reduced public appearances due to health challenges. His family had previously maintained a level of privacy around his personal life and wellbeing.
The actor’s passing also comes after several false reports of his death circulated online in previous years. In 2024, his son and the Actors Guild of Nigeria dismissed one such report, confirming at the time that Jacobs was alive.
Jacobs turned 84 on July 11, 2026. His wife, Joke Silva, had celebrated his birthday publicly earlier this year.
For generations of Nigerian audiences, Olu Jacobs remained a prominent figure whose career helped shape the country’s theatre, television and film landscape.
He is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren.
The family has asked the public and members of the media to respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of the veteran actor.
