Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartunkova produced a major upset at the China Open on Sunday, defeating second seed Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to send the four-time Grand Slam champion out of the tournament in the third round.
The 20-year-old Bartunkova, ranked 34th in the world, defeated the Belarusian 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 35 minutes at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China.
Sabalenka, currently ranked world number two, struggled to convert her opportunities against an opponent who remained composed during crucial moments of the contest. Bartunkova’s defensive resilience and ability to hit deep returns prevented the Belarusian from establishing control.
The Czech player made an early breakthrough in the opening set, breaking Sabalenka’s serve in the first game. Sabalenka had an opportunity to respond in the sixth game but failed to convert any of her five break points, allowing Bartunkova to maintain her advantage and take the set 6-4.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Bartunkova maintaining pressure and securing the decisive breaks. Sabalenka became visibly frustrated after losing her serve in the fourth game and threw her racquet, but she was unable to turn the match around.
Bartunkova eventually sealed the victory on her first match point when Sabalenka returned the ball into the net.
Speaking after the match, Bartunkova acknowledged the quality of her opponent and said she had concentrated on remaining calm throughout the encounter.
“I focused on myself, to be calm. Aryna is great. She’s a legend. She’s a Grand Slam champion,” she said.
The victory sends Bartunkova into the round of 16, where she is scheduled to face Austria’s Sinja Kraus, who advanced after defeating Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 6-4.
Sabalenka’s elimination is another disappointing result at a tournament where she has struggled to reproduce her best performances. Despite being one of the leading players on the women’s tour, she has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the China Open.
Her exit also follows a difficult period in the latter part of the 2026 season. Sabalenka began the year strongly, winning the Indian Wells and Miami titles to complete the prestigious Sunshine Double. However, she has not added another title since those victories.
She reached the US Open final in September but lost to Elena Rybakina, who subsequently replaced her at the top of the women’s world rankings. The defeat in Beijing therefore adds to a challenging run for the former world number one.
The China Open has now lost both its top women’s seeds within two days. Rybakina, who entered the tournament as the number one seed and newly crowned world number one, was eliminated in the second round on Saturday by unseeded Alina Charaeva.
Charaeva defeated Rybakina 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Bartunkova followed with her straight-sets victory over Sabalenka a day later.
The early exits have opened up the women’s draw, creating opportunities for the remaining players to progress further in the WTA 1000 tournament.
For Bartunkova, the victory represents one of the biggest wins of her career, having defeated a player with four major singles titles and extensive experience at the highest level of the sport.
The result also highlights the competitive depth of the women’s tour, where lower-ranked players can challenge established champions when they execute their game plans effectively.
