One construction worker sustained minor injuries after a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, October 17, 2026, with NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office receiving an emergency alert at approximately 6:30 p.m.
In a statement issued by its Press Unit, the agency said it activated relevant emergency response stakeholders, including the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, following the report. The AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team was also deployed to coordinate emergency operations at the scene.
NEMA said preliminary findings indicated that the incident involved a five-storey building under construction that had been partially pulled down. The agency described the incident as minor and confirmed that no life was lost.
The injured worker was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention. As of the agency’s reported update, no fatalities had been recorded.
The incident has renewed attention on building safety in the Federal Capital Territory, where several structural collapses have been reported in recent months. However, the precise circumstances surrounding Saturday’s incident, including what led to the partial collapse, have not been established in the available reports.
On September 7, a three-storey building collapsed in the Wuse area of Abuja after officials of the FCT Administration’s Department of Development Control had reportedly sealed the property and directed occupants to vacate it over safety concerns.
Another building collapse occurred in Kubwa in August, when part of a residential building comprising six blocks of flats gave way, trapping two residents who were later rescued and taken to hospital.
Earlier, on May 16, at least five people were killed when a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area, near Gudu Market, Abuja. The incident prompted FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to order an investigation and warn developers to comply with building regulations and permit relevant government officials to inspect construction sites.
The latest incident underscores continuing concerns about construction safety and regulatory compliance in the capital. Authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of adherence to approved building plans and safety requirements, although the cause of the Durban Street incident remains unconfirmed.
