British-Guyanese actress Letitia Wright, widely known for portraying Shuri in Marvel’s Black Panther films, has spoken openly about her Christian faith and how her relationship with Jesus Christ changed her outlook on life, success and her acting career.
Wright has previously recounted how she went through a difficult period in her life, including severe depression, before attending a Bible study for actors in London. She said the experience ultimately led her to Christianity and changed the way she viewed her identity and career.
‘My soul was dying, and He saved me’
Reflecting on her spiritual journey, Wright said she came to realise that her pursuit of acting and professional success had become too important in her life.
“My soul was dying, and He saved me,” the actress said in an earlier interview, explaining her desire to share her Christian testimony with others.
Wright has also spoken about how her faith gave her a sense of security that she had previously sought through career achievements and external validation.
“I felt secure, like I didn’t need validation from anyone else, or from getting a part. My happiness wasn’t dependent on that; it was dependent on my relationship with God,” she said during an appearance on the British television programme This Morning.
She stepped away from acting
According to Wright, her growing faith led her to take a break from acting because she believed she had begun to idolise her career.
She eventually stepped away from the industry for several months to focus on her relationship with God. During that period, she even turned down an acting opportunity involving Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, according to accounts of her testimony.
Wright later said she understood the decision as part of a process of putting God first rather than allowing her career to define her.
“I need to spend time with God because, you know, this is where I need to put my heart first,” she recalled telling her agent.
‘This is your ministry’
After spending months away from acting, Wright eventually returned to the profession with a different perspective.
She said she came to understand that acting could itself become a form of ministry and a platform through which she could express her faith and positively influence others.
Rather than viewing acting primarily as a route to fame or recognition, Wright said she wanted to use her platform to share God’s love.
“Where I go, where He takes me, that’s where I need to spread the love of God,” she said.
Her return to acting was followed by one of the biggest roles of her career: Shuri, the technologically gifted princess of Wakanda in Black Panther. Her performance helped establish her as an internationally recognised actress.
‘I fell in love with Jesus’
Wright has continued to speak publicly about her Christian faith, including the importance of remaining grounded despite the pressures and expectations that come with fame.
She has described her relationship with Christ as central to her identity and said she no longer feels the same pressure to seek perfection or validation from others.
“I fell in love with Jesus and I’m still in love. Amen,” Wright said in an earlier interview.
Her testimony has resonated particularly with Christian audiences because it presents a different perspective on success—one in which career achievement does not determine a person’s identity or worth.
For Wright, the lesson from her journey is not necessarily that believers must abandon their careers, but that success should not take the place of their relationship with God.
As she continues her career in the entertainment industry, Wright has said she wants her work and influence to reflect the faith that she believes transformed her life.
