The Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka William, has died at a hospital in Abuja, throwing the state’s political and public service community into mourning.
William reportedly died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, while receiving medical attention in Abuja. His death was announced by his brother, Nkang William, in a statement issued on Sunday.
Nkang expressed shock over the sudden loss, describing his brother as not only a sibling but also a companion and an important member of the family.
“I am struggling to believe that I am writing these words about you, my beloved brother, Dr. Eka Williams Abang,” he said, according to reports of the statement.
He questioned how someone who had recently been with the family could suddenly become a memory, adding that the loss had left him heartbroken.
William served as Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy under the administration of Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu. Records of the governor’s cabinet identify him as the commissioner responsible for the state’s power and renewable energy portfolio.
His death makes him the second commissioner to die during Governor Otu’s administration. The state’s former Commissioner for Tourism, Abubakar Ewa, died in 2025.
As of Sunday, reports said the Cross River State Government had not yet issued a separate official statement on William’s death.
The circumstances surrounding his death, including the nature of the ailment for which he was receiving treatment, have not been officially disclosed.
The death is expected to generate further reactions from the Cross River State Government, political leaders, colleagues and members of the public as tributes begin to emerge.
