Former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang has credited former military president General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida with shaping his public service career, saying the confidence reposed in him through his appointment as Military Governor of Benue and Gongola states changed the course of his life.
Jang made the remarks on Saturday in Jos during the presentation of his autobiography as part of activities marking his 80th birthday. He said Babangida saw potential in him and entrusted him with the responsibility of leadership, an opportunity for which he remains grateful despite the premature end of his military career.
“I owe a special debt of gratitude to His Excellency, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. He saw potential in me and entrusted me with the great responsibility of serving as the Military Governor of Benue and Gongola States. That confidence changed the course of my public service, and I remain sincerely grateful for the opportunity he gave me to serve our nation,” Jang said.
The elder statesman explained that his autobiography was written to preserve an accurate account of his life and public service, saying he was persuaded by his son, Yakubu, to document his experiences after years of resisting the idea. According to him, the book seeks to place key events in their proper context, address misconceptions surrounding some of his decisions, and provide lessons for younger generations rather than settle scores with anyone.
Jang also expressed appreciation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for supporting the actualisation of the mandate freely given to him by the people of Plateau State, and commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for supporting the state during his administration through the appointment of a Grade A minister from Plateau, the refund of funds spent on federal roads, and the approval of Operation Rainbow to strengthen security in the state.
The former governor thanked Vice President Kashim Shettima for attending the event despite his official engagements and expressed gratitude to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the people of the state for organising the celebration in his honour. He also paid tribute to his wife and family for their unwavering support throughout his life’s journey.
Reflecting on his eight decades of life, Jang said political power, fame and wealth were temporary, while faith, character and service to humanity remained enduring. He dedicated the autobiography to God and urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace Christ and pursue eternal values above worldly success.
“Life is far greater than worldly success, political office, wealth or recognition. All these things will one day pass away. Our ultimate goal should be to spend eternity with Christ. That is the greatest achievement any human being can ever attain,” he said.
