Elon Musk has agreed to rename SpaceX’s artificial intelligence division from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, aligning the company’s branding with United States President Donald Trump’s campaign to replace the widely used term “artificial intelligence” with “super intelligence”.
Musk confirmed the proposed change on Sunday, October 4, in a response to a user on his social media platform, X, who asked whether SpaceXAI would adopt the name SpaceXSI.
“Yes, we will make that change,” the billionaire entrepreneur replied.
The announcement followed another post in which Musk indicated his preference for the abbreviation “SI”, writing that it was better than “AI”. He also described SpaceX as a super intelligence company.
However, the rebranding had not been completed as of the time of the initial reports. SpaceXAI’s account on X was still using its existing name, and Musk did not provide a date for when the proposed change would take effect.
The decision comes days after Trump signed an executive order on September 29 directing federal government departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official communications, policy documents and other government materials, to the extent permitted by law.
The White House said the terminology was intended to reflect what it considers the rapidly advancing capabilities and potential of the technology.
Trump has argued that describing the technology as “artificial” does not adequately capture its capabilities. During his address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, he called for the new terminology to be adopted beyond the United States government.
The executive order, however, primarily concerns language used by the US executive branch. It does not automatically compel private technology companies, researchers or other countries to abandon the established term artificial intelligence.
Musk’s decision therefore represents a voluntary branding move rather than a requirement imposed on his company by the presidential directive.
SpaceXAI is the artificial intelligence division operating under Musk’s SpaceX business following the integration of his AI company, xAI, into the aerospace firm earlier in 2026.
The company adopted the SpaceXAI name in July, bringing its AI activities and products, including the Grok chatbot, under the new branding.
The proposed switch to SpaceXSI marks another change in the identity of Musk’s expanding technology operations, which span space exploration, satellite communications, artificial intelligence and social media.
The development also reflects the growing influence of political and corporate branding in the global technology industry, particularly as governments and private companies compete to establish leadership in advanced AI systems.
While Trump is promoting “super intelligence” as a more appropriate description, the phrase has a distinct meaning in technology discussions. It is commonly associated with hypothetical or advanced intelligence systems that could exceed human cognitive capabilities across a wide range of tasks. The term is not simply an established replacement for every form of artificial intelligence.
Musk has not explained whether the proposed name change will affect SpaceXAI’s products, research priorities, corporate structure or existing services. No changes to the company’s operating model were announced alongside his confirmation.
For now, the announcement establishes Musk’s intention to adopt the new name, while the timing and practical details of the rebranding remain unclear.
