The United States has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation on shared priorities, including democracy, religious freedom, trade and security.
The U.S. Mission Nigeria conveyed the message on Thursday, October 1, through its official social media account, extending congratulations on behalf of the American government to Nigerians at home and abroad.
In the goodwill message, the United States described its relationship with Nigeria as important and welcomed the substantive diplomatic discussions held between both countries over the past year.
The statement recognised Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest democracy and one of its biggest economies, noting the country’s role in promoting regional stability and economic growth.
It also expressed Washington’s commitment to working alongside Nigeria towards common objectives, particularly in areas where both countries have shared interests.
The U.S. Mission identified democratic principles, the protection of religious freedom, stronger commercial relations, peace and security as important foundations of the partnership.
It further acknowledged the importance of continued engagement between the two governments, saying the relationship was built around a shared commitment to progress and cooperation.
The message concluded with a wish for Nigeria to enjoy peace, unity, prosperity and hope in the years ahead.
The statement comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between Abuja and Washington on security, economic cooperation and other strategic issues.
In July 2026, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia visited Nigeria and held discussions with senior government officials, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sola Enikanolaiye and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
The discussions covered security cooperation, religious freedom, justice sector reform, digital transformation, commercial diplomacy and regional stability. The visit formed part of broader engagement between both countries on areas of mutual interest.
The U.S. Mission’s latest Independence Day message provides a further indication of the importance Washington attaches to its relationship with Nigeria, although it does not announce a new agreement, financial commitment or specific policy initiative.
Nigeria marks its Independence Anniversary every October 1, commemorating its independence from British colonial rule in 1960. The 66th anniversary offers an opportunity for the country to reflect on its national development and its relationships with international partners.
For Nigeria and the United States, continued diplomatic dialogue and cooperation remain central to addressing shared concerns, strengthening economic ties and advancing regional and international stability.
