President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, calling for greater unity, mutual understanding and renewed commitment to building a stronger nation.

Akpabio made the call in a goodwill message released on Thursday, October 1, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, to commemorate Nigeria’s independence anniversary.

Describing Nigeria as “our destiny, our duty, our future,” the Senate President said the occasion was an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence in 1960 and recognise the sacrifices of those who laid the foundation for the nation.

He paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers and successive generations whose courage, hard work and contributions helped shape the country, saying their efforts had left Nigerians with a responsibility to preserve the nation and build a better future.

Akpabio acknowledged that Nigeria’s 66-year journey had included significant achievements as well as difficult periods, but maintained that citizens had continued to demonstrate determination and hope despite the challenges.

He described this resilience as one of the defining characteristics of Nigerians, noting that the spirit of the country could be seen in the everyday efforts of farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs and young people working towards their aspirations.

He also highlighted the contributions of Nigerians in areas such as music, business, hospitality and other fields, including the achievements of citizens living abroad.

According to the Senate President, these contributions demonstrate the potential of the country and the role ordinary Nigerians play in shaping its identity and future.

Akpabio urged citizens to use the Independence Day celebration to renew their commitment to peaceful coexistence, stressing that the country’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity should be a source of unity rather than division.

He said Nigerians, regardless of their backgrounds and beliefs, belonged to one national family and should extend greater affection and friendship to one another.

The Senate President also paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their service and sacrifices in protecting the country.

He particularly remembered personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty and acknowledged the sacrifices of their families, saying their contributions deserved national recognition.

On the role of the legislature in national development, Akpabio assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would remain committed to supporting efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen the country and improve the lives of citizens.

His remarks came on the same day President Tinubu delivered his 66th Independence Day address to Nigerians, in which the President reflected on the country’s economic journey and outlined his administration’s focus on moving from economic reforms towards greater prosperity.

Akpabio further called for a shared commitment to serving the country with integrity, compassion and a sense of responsibility, emphasising that national development required contributions from both leaders and citizens.

Nigeria marks its Independence Anniversary every October 1, commemorating its attainment of independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

The 66th anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s political, economic and social development, while renewing conversations about national unity, security, governance and the aspirations of its citizens.

Akpabio concluded his message by urging Nigerians to celebrate with gratitude, maintain faith in the country’s possibilities and work together towards a future that reflects the hopes of generations yet to come.
