Human rights lawyer and public-interest advocate, Samuel Ihensekhien Jnr, who is also counsel to Chronicles Reporters, has been named the main winner of the Daily Trust Unsung Hero Award for 2026.
The prestigious recognition, announced by Media Trust Limited, celebrates Nigerians whose selfless service, often away from publicity, strengthens the nation’s social fabric and advances justice for the vulnerable.
Ihensekhien, Principal Partner of PathLegal & Co and Country Legal Adviser to One Love Foundation, is also legal counsel to Chronicles Reporters. For nearly two decades, he has practised law with the conviction that the justice system must protect the weak as firmly as it restrains the powerful.
Among his major cases is the celebrated Gloria Okolie matter, in which he secured a landmark N60 million judgment from the Federal Capital Territory High Court after the young woman spent 248 days in detention over alleged links to IPOB.
He also represented Clement Sagwak, the security guard assaulted at Banex Plaza, Abuja, petitioning the National Human Rights Commission over claims of abuse of power and torture.
Other signature victories include the Ghana versus Mary Omerere case, the ECOWAS Court success in the Ogechi Njaka matter affirming due process and human dignity, the landmark Twitter Ban litigation at the ECOWAS Court of Justice in which he served as lead counsel with SERAP, securing relief for millions of Nigerian users, the Adebisi Adenusi defence, and pioneering work advancing freedom of religion across Africa.
He has appeared before international and African regional courts, establishing precedents on digital rights, freedom of expression and protection of fundamental liberties.
Beyond the courtroom, Ihensekhien has demonstrated exceptional institutional advocacy. He led a 12-lawyer team to the National Assembly on behalf of Guardians of Democracy NGO during petition hearings concerning suspended lawmakers from Benue and Zamfara States. The effort contributed to the recall of some affected legislators.
He issued an advisory opinion on the jurisdiction of the National Assembly to proceed with certain actions despite pending court cases, demanded accelerated hearing of related matters, and described the 16-month executive-led removals in Zamfara as unconstitutional. He has presented multiple cases before the Public Petitions Committee against China and other foreign countries accused of breaching the rights of Nigerians.
In addition to these high-profile interventions, Ihensekhien has undertaken more than 10 other humanitarian and legal-defence initiatives, including extensive free legal-aid programmes for indigent clients, sustained litigation against police brutality, advisory support to international courts and human-rights mechanisms, community advocacy and mediation efforts that have de-escalated local conflicts, and mentorship of young lawyers in public-interest practice. Through One Love Foundation and related platforms, he has coordinated relief and rights-protection interventions for victims of state excess and social injustice.
Ihensekhien has consistently rejected the label of “hero.” In previous remarks, he described himself as “a catalyst of change,” insisting that the real heroes are ordinary citizens who endure hardship yet still place their trust in the legal system.
Daily Trust’s Unsung Heroes initiative annually identifies individuals whose resilience, compassion and quiet service embody the best of the Nigerian spirit.
By selecting Samuel Ihensekhien as the principal honouree for 2026, the organisers have spotlighted a career that demonstrates how determined legal advocacy, institutional engagement and humanitarian commitment can expand access to justice and strengthen democratic norms.
